The school has a specialist SPLD (Specific Learning Difficulties – Dyslexia) tutor. She supports pupils in KS3 and KS4 (where necessary) to help them improve spelling, reading and comprehension.
In addition, provision is made to support pupils in KS4 with study skills.
An ELSA (Emotional Literacy Support Assistant) is a member of staff who is a member of staff who is trained to support pupils in the development of their emotional literacy.

The school has a dedicated mentor to support pupils from this community. Pupils are supported academically and socially promoting inclusion. The mentor acts as a vital link between home and school ensuring that positive relationships are built and maintained to help pupils reach their potential.
All pupils sit National Literacy tests in years 6,7,8 and 9. The results are used to identify pupils who would benefit from targeted literacy intervention. This takes place in the form of small group withdrawal (a maximum of 6 pupils). Some pupils are seen on an individual basis.
Nationally recognised courses are followed including Reading Reflex, Toe by Toe, Read Write Ink and Sound Training to name but a few.
